The kitchen project
Back back

Earlier this year (2011) my landlord asked if I would upgrade his newly installed kitchen by adding panels drawer fronts and doors made from his own timber , which was New Zealand Rimu recovered from a felled tree on his property, and converted into random widths lengths and thicknesses.

Ideally the job should have been done before the cabinets etc were installed , but .....

Apart from much backwards and forwarding the job proceeded at a reasonably relaxed pace and involved a significant element of hand work such as hand planing. The Rimu was very pleasant to work when compared with African timbers I have used extensively such as Iroko and Makore. All mortises were cut with a Felder square chisel mortiser, the tenons were cut on my shaper and the work was finished with a pre-catalysed lacquer.

Philip,
Looks great. That M12 looks like a serious mitre as well. I am curious,
why don't you use planes that you make for your work?

Hi XXXXXXXXXXX,
I don't use my own planes because they need to go to customers as soon as I make them - so I can pay bills .....
Actually if I were doing plenty of woodworking like I used to do I would be sure to have at least a J20A of my own. I have three minis which I have kept for myself and did use them for that kitchen job where possible.
Regards,
Philip
